Meet Bond… James Bond (or “BJB” to his friends)—a local community cat whose story perfectly captures what Indy Neighborhood Cats’ Community Cat Program is all about.

Targeted Medical Care During Spay/Neuter Appointment

For an unaltered tomcat, life on the street means constant fighting to defend territory, protect himself, and compete for mates. When BJB developed a painful eye issue, our team knew he needed urgent medical attention.

To avoid the stress and health risks of sedating a community cat twice, INC’s medical program coordinates targeted treatments right alongside routine spay/neuter procedures. He was transported to our primary veterinary partners at IndyHumane, where he was neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped, and treated. Thankfully, his eye did not need to be removed. Instead, it was thoroughly cleaned, medicated, and BJB was back in his home territory by Wednesday afternoon.

His caretaker later shared a rare moment of affection: BJB allowed her to pet him for a few minutes before reverting to his independent outdoor persona. As she joked, “Bond… James Bond is not to be trusted!” While short-lived, that moment of trust was deeply rewarding.

Why Proactive Spay/Neuter Matters for Indy

Spay and neuter is the single most proactive action we can take to reduce the free-roaming cat population in Indianapolis. This applies to community cats and domestic cats alike. When house cats remain unaltered, an accidental escape, unexpected litter, or sudden change in family circumstances can quickly land those cats, or their kittens, on the street.

Our community cat program works continuously to address these needs across the city:

• 27 Medical Cases: Managed within the current month alone, giving outdoor cats medical treatment during their spay/neuter appointments.

• 60+ Community Cats: Trapped, fixed, vaccinated, ear-tipped, and safely returned to their colonies in just one week.

• 20 Household Pets: Registered and scheduled for spay/neuter through our joint pet food pantry initiative in one week.
