Is the Cat Owned or Unowned?
When it comes to cats outdoors, there are a few things to consider. First, is the cat owned or unowned? If the cat is a fixed (spayed/neutered) community cat, then they’ll have their left ear tipped. If the cat has no eartip, then it’s possible that it hasn’t been through a TNR program yet. It’s also entirely possible that a non-eartipped, outdoor cat is either an owned pet or an abandoned pet. If you are able to determine that the pet is owned, then it’s the responsibility of the owner to seek care for their cat. Determine the Urgency of the Medical Need for Sick Cats
Whether you’re new to the world of caring for community cats or you’re a seasoned pro, it can be challenging to know when it’s time to get help for a sick cat (sneezing, goopy eyes, not eating). In partnership with FACE and Indianapolis Animal Care Services, we’ve put together this chart which can help you determine when it’s time to report a community cat who is suffering from Upper Respiratory issues.
Submit a Service Request on the Request Indy Web Portal
If the community cat in question has an injury (such as a broken leg or other wounds) or is very sick, then time may be of the essence. If it’s possible to safely contain the cat in a manageable, quiet space like a garage, trap, or crate, then do so. Once the cat is contained, submit a service request with Request Indy, or you can call 317-327-4622 during business hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) to talk with someone in the Mayor’s Action Center. Links and instructions for submitting an online request can be found below.
