Diatomaceous Earth
Since handling feral cats isn’t realistic, the goal is to reduce fleas, mites, and insects where they live, sleep, and feed. Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is an effective, non-chemical, and practical tool used in healthy TNR community cat colony management when applied carefully.
What It Is & How It Works
Diatomaceous earth is a fine powder made from fossilized microscopic algae. While it feels soft to human hands, it damages insects’ outer shells, causing adult fleas, mites, and other pests to dry out and die. Because DE primarily affects adult insects, it works best as part of an ongoing environmental maintenance routine alongside other control methods.
Critical Safety Rules for Caretakers
Use Food-Grade ONLY: Never use pool- or filter-grade DE. Pool-grade DE contains high levels of crystalline silica and is extremely dangerous to animals and humans.
Apply in the Environment, NOT on Cats: Vets strongly caution against applying DE directly to an animal’s fur or skin. It dries out their skin and causes severe respiratory irritation if inhaled.
Avoid Dust Inhalation: Apply when cats are not present, dust lightly, and let all airborne particles settle completely before allowing cats back into the area.
Practical Colony Applications
Colony Shelters: Sprinkle a thin layer under straw bedding inside shelter boxes to help reduce fleas and mites in sleeping quarters.
Feeding Stations: Dust lightly around the outer perimeter—never directly on food or water—to deter crawling insects.
Food Storage: Dust inside food bins or cracks around storage areas to keep pests out of dry food supplies.
Application Checklist for Caretakers
[ ] Verify packaging explicitly states “Food-Grade” Diatomaceous Earth.
[ ] Wait until cats leave the area before applying.
[ ] Apply a thin, light layer beneath shelter straw (not on top of bedding).
[ ] Lightly dust perimeters around feeding zones, keeping powder clear of food and water bowls.
[ ] Allow all dust to settle before opening shelters or feeding areas back up.
